Technical Services Specialist

We're looking for an experienced technical specialist to support the development and delivery of our digital publishing apps and media. You'll perform initial analysis of reported problems to analyse impact to our services and determine potential solutions. You'll work closely with the mobile app and server API teams to identify the source of inconsistencies and document unexpected and unwanted behaviour in mobile and web apps.

The Technical Services team provide statistical reports for publishers and internal requesters—this includes requirement capture, data extraction from relational databases and post processing. You'll be part of the team that also provide support and technical guidance for HTML content producers and outline, draft and edit documentation for developers, users and publishers.

What we are looking for:

  • Experienced using relational databases and SQL language for data reporting and extraction
  • Experience of web hosting, content delivery services and data APIs using HTTP
  • Experience of HTML, CSS & JavaScript content generation and problem solving
  • Knowledge of data storage and interchange formats such as XML, JSON and TEXT
  • Knowledge of PDF and imaging technologies in print and digital contexts
  • Knowledge of common graphics and business applications such as Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Excel… &c.
  • Knowledge of automation tools and scripting languages
  • Awareness of mobile app technologies and the app development process

Personal Skill:

  • Conceptualise and navigate complex data models and business rules
  • Finely tuned fault analysis skills

Mobile Webkit, UI & Motion Graphics Developer

We're looking for a Mobile Webkit, UI & Motion Graphics Developer to develop rich interactive content for mobile devices and desktop class user interfaces for our web apps. We've made great progress in digital publishing over the last three years and now want to build more sophisticated user interfaces and info-graphics. We're only developing for webkit mobile devices so you won't be bogged down with compatibility libraries, hacks and compromise.

What we are looking for:

You will have expertise in HTML, CSS & Javascript and know the right combination to produce cinematic effects efficiently and effectively. Performance is important to us: short load times, execution speed and memory footprint are all valued so you won't need an to know about libraries such as jQuery or Prototype but just rely on your intimate knowledge of the Javascript language and runtime. To get such great performance, you'll need to know about the debugging and sampling tools found in the latest versions of webkit browsers and proficient with any graphics applications such as Photoshop, Illustrator… etc. To create great desktop-class web interfaces for production tools, you'll be aware frameworks similar to SproutCore, Cappuccino and Backbone.js. We're interested in user experience, interface illustration and strong typography and obsessed with detail; so you will be too. You'll have motivation, talent and an enthusiasm for beautiful, pragmatic code and elegant solutions. Working closely with other mobile and server app developers requires exemplary written and oral communication skills and it helps if you're a nice person.

C++ QT Mobile App Developer

PHP Developer/Software Engineer

We are looking for a PHP developer/software engineer to join our team to assist in the development of web services and sites to support mobile apps. You will work with our other server developers to maintain PixelMags' API and admin tools, and will also work on developing new features, and providing ongoing performance optimisation within our API and database. You will work closely with our client applications team to deliver reliable, efficient web services to support new and existing client platforms.

Our web services are written in PHP 5x, utilising the CodeIgniter framework, so a strong knowledge and experience of PHP is essential, and experience with other languages (such as Ruby, Java) and environments is advantageous. Part of the business critical systems are written in Python, so a working knowledge of Python would also be useful. A thorough working knowledge of MySQL and optimised SQL queries is required. Ideally, you would have an understanding of multi threaded applications, deadlocks, row/table blocking, race conditions, compound index usage etc, and be able to demonstrate good code design principles.

Other frequently used technologies which you should have a strong working knowledge of, include: JSON, HTTP, XML, REST, XHTML, CSS, Javascript, OpenSSL crypto keys and certificates. In additional, experience of as many of the following as possible would be an advantage: Sphinx, RabbitMQ, Django, Celery, Python, MySQL, Debian, Redhat, Amazon S3, Amazon SES and Amazon CloudFront.

You must also feel comfortable with managing your own development environment (WAMP/MAMP/LAMP etc). We are looking for an individual with a methodical and meticulous approach to software engineering; both programming and process. Good communication skills are needed to meticulously document the process and work effectively with the application engineering teams.

This is a full-time position, working from our office at Wrest Park, Silsoe, Bedfordshire, UK.
