You want your canal cruise to stay relaxed, even if the weather suddenly turns. So make it easy on yourself with one choice upfront: are you mainly going for being outside and taking photos, or do you mostly want to sit dry and comfortable? Covered cruising is especially nice if you don’t feel like managing the weather. You sit more sheltered, your bag stays dry more easily, and you have to adjust less when it’s windy or drizzling. It feels a bit calmer: more “in your own bubble,” while you still get to see the city.

A quick check to decide: even without rain, open cruising can feel chilly, especially if you’re sitting still and there’s wind. (Partly) covered can feel a bit more “indoors” if you want a very wide, open view. And in wet weather it helps if visibility stays good (for example, if droplets or condensation can be wiped away quickly). If you keep this in mind beforehand, your choice usually becomes obvious.

Rain by itself is often still fine. It’s mainly the combination of rain *and* wind that determines how comfortable it stays. (Partly) covered cruising takes care of the most important part for you: sitting dry and sheltered, so your attention stays on the city instead of your hood.

In changeable weather, a partly covered boat or a boat with a flexible canopy gives you extra room to adapt. You keep more of that outdoor feeling, while your upper body and legs stay dry more often. That’s handy if you don’t want to keep gambling on “maybe it’ll stop in a minute.”

How you experience the trip matters too. If you’re mostly sitting still, you’ll feel cool air sooner. And duration plays a role: on a short trip, open is often fine, but on longer cruises many people prefer (partly) covered because you stay comfortable for longer, drier and more out of the wind.

When (partly) covered often fits best: if you want to continue with your day afterward (for example, a reservation or another activity) and you’d like to arrive dry. When open often works better: if you’ve got flexibility in your schedule and you’re coming specifically for that real outdoor feeling.

What should you plan smartly in advance?

You usually get the most calm in your schedule by locking in two things: a time slot and a departure point that makes sense along your route. That prevents rushing and gives you a relaxed start. The rest is often better kept a bit flexible, so you can adapt more easily to the weather and to how you feel in the moment.

The type of cruise also helps you choose: shared or private. Private means your own group and gives you more control over the vibe. Shared is simply easy: join in and go, without organizing anything. Extras like drinks, a guide, or audio are best chosen based on what you enjoy: more stories and context, or just quietly taking it all in without too much information.

Quick decision help by group

Open cruising is best if unobstructed views and photos are the priority. (Partly) covered is usually more comfortable if you’re with kids, if you want to sit longer without dealing with wet clothes, or if you’d rather not depend on a dry spell.

Padstow Hidden Gems: Explore Cornwall Beyond Tourist Crowds

Padstow is undeniably one of the prettiest spots on the Cornish coast, yet many of those who come here will queue at restaurants for most of their stay, fight for a space outside the harbor for a selfie and invariably set out to tick boxes. Then there’s the other Padstow, the quieter one, the more interesting one, that’s completely achievable if you know where to look.

Pick Your Timing Carefully

The best decision to make before planning a trip to Padstow is to choose the time you’ll visit. The best time to visit is generally late April through May. The weather is still nice and cool, the town is lush and green, and you can expect to see more locals than tourists.

Early October is also a great time to go. The autumn light is beautiful, the views of the estuary are unobstructed, and you can generally book a table at a nice restaurant the day before you go. Best of all, you’ll have time to take it all in.

May offers the added incentive of the ‘Obby ‘Oss festival on May Day, which celebrates the arrival of spring with parades, song, and dance. Best of all, the festival is the real thing, not staged for tourists. You get to be part of it standing shoulder to shoulder with the locals.

Go Beyond the Harbor Loop

Many tourists follow the same route when visiting Padstow: the quay, some fish and chips, a quick look at Rick Stein’s restaurant through the window, take a photo of the harbor, and repeat. However, this route doesn’t highlight the real charm of Padstow.

Leave the busy harbor and start walking uphill. Fentonluna Lane and the cozy streets around it will lead you through the old residential part of the village, passing slate-hung houses that probably look the same as they did 100 years ago.

Templebar Road is another good one, a narrow, steep street that hosts lovely independent clothing stores and tiny galleries with a fraction of the customers of the touristy quay-side shops.

Here you’ll get a good sense of Padstow as a genuine community and not just a destination for seafood. And it shows.

Eat Like You Live Here

While the big names, Rick Stein, Paul Ainsworth at No.6, are an easy special dinner to justify, eat only in Padstow’s celebrity spots and you will have missed almost all of its food.

The best crab sandwich you ever eat in Cornwall may well come from one of the tiny shellfish shacks right on the quay: fresh, dressed, and served in a paper bag for a few pounds. No reservation required. When you’re exploring places to stay in Padstow, being near the quay means you can grab one of these on a whim.

The Chough Bakery is the pasty of choice. Family-run, locally sourced, still crimping the pastry along the top the traditional way. Get one and head to the harborside to eat it.
Independent cafes on the backstreets serve quality coffee with no wait, and delis stock local cheese, charcuterie, and Cornish goods. Shopping like this rather than eating every meal out really is how the townsfolk do Padstow.

Walk the Low-Tide Beaches

The harbor itself tends to steal the show, but the beach experience close to Padstow is actually far superior to what most people understand because they are in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Harbour Cove, also known as Tregirls, is a broad sandy beach a brief stroll from town and shielded from the wind in a manner the harbor mouth is not. At low tide, Harbour Cove and Hawkers Cove connect into one long, largely empty stretch of sand.

The trick is checking the tide times before you go, at high tide the beach mostly disappears. At low tide it’s the kind of expanse that makes you wonder where everyone else is.

Most people don’t come here because it’s a twenty minute walk from town. That walk is the filter.

Get On the Camel Trail at the Right Time

The Camel Trail is an 18-mile long, car-free route that runs along the estuary from Padstow, inland along the route of the old Bodmin railway. It is one of the most beautiful, flat cycling routes in the UK. It is also, in summer, one of the busiest.

So here’s what you do. Wait until late afternoon when the bike-hire family groups have returned for their baths and dinners, and then ride out into the golden hour toward Wadebridge. You will have long sections of the trail almost to yourself and the light on the estuary in the evening is extraordinary.

Alternatively, get up early and head out on to the trail. A walk or cycle toward Wadebridge at 7am when the mist is still on the water is one of those things that people come back to Padstow on repeat for. It costs nothing, requires no more equipment than your legs and your willingness to rise at dawn.

Take the Ferry to Somewhere Most People Don’t Go

The Black Tor Ferry is a foot ferry that crosses the Camel Estuary to Rock, it operates frequently and the crossing takes about ten minutes. Rock is solidly affluent and self-contained, and many of the people who come across on the ferry simply wander the village.

A better plan is to stroll through the village and the dunes to St Enodoc Church, a 12th-century church that became so buried in sand that the vicar had to be lowered through a hole in the roof to conduct services. It has since been excavated and is still functioning, and its churchyard contains the grave of the poet John Betjeman.

The walk through the dunes is brief, the out-of-the-way-ness genuinely extreme, and you can be pretty certain that almost nobody you pass at the Padstow quay ever gets there.

Hike to Stepper Point For the View

The South West Coast Path goes right through Padstow, and the easiest section to access for a half-day walk is the one heading up Stepper Point, the headland at the mouth of the Camel Estuary. It’s a roughly 45-minute-to-an-hour walk each way, with views past the Doom Bar (a legendary sandbank) out into the open Atlantic, and back down the wild, empty coast to the south and Trevose Head.

At sunset, this is the best vantage point in the area, unobstructed, wind-swept, and completely free. The view of the Doom Bar in the evening, with the light changing on the sand, is the sort of view that will stick in your head.

To be honest, probably forever. If you have a little more time, make the drive up to Trevose Head. A National Trust-protected headland with a working lighthouse, it’s absolutely gorgeous and full of seabirds and coastal flowers most Padstow tourists never see.

Stay Somewhere That Makes You Part of the Town

Where you sleep makes the difference in the type of trip you have. A hotel keeps you at a remove from the place, room service, generic breakfast, checkout. A self-catering cottage in the old town puts you in it.

Staying in a traditional Cornish stone cottage means you can buy fresh fish from the quayside fishmonger and cook it yourself. You can pick up a local loaf, make coffee, and decide what you’re doing without fitting around a restaurant’s schedule. You’re living in the town rather than consuming it.

This also matters for the community. Tourism supports around 30% of all jobs in Cornwall (Visit Cornwall), and choosing locally-owned accommodation, independent bakeries, and family-run eateries rather than chains is a direct way of contributing to the economy that makes the town what it is.

Spend Time With the Town’s Working Identity

Padstow is still a fishing port. It’s easy to forget that behind the restaurants and gift shops, but the harbor has boats going out, catches coming in, and a maritime culture that goes back centuries.
The National Lobster Hatchery on the quayside is a marine conservation charity that raises juvenile lobsters and returns them to local waters.

It’s open to visitors, genuinely interesting, and staffed by people who can explain the real pressures that commercial fishing puts on the local ecosystem. Spending an hour there gives you a completely different relationship with the seafood you’re about to eat.

Padstow Museum, small, volunteer-run, and housed in the town’s old market hall, covers the town’s social and maritime history through artifacts and photographs that the locals themselves donated. It won’t take your whole afternoon, but it reframes the town in a way that a quayside wander doesn’t.

The Version of Padstow Worth Finding

There are two Padstows. One of them you’ll find in the queue, in your evening meal, and trapped on the harbor as the loop jams with tourists. The other is on the Camel Trail, in the silent estuary churches, wading through the low tide’s diamond sands and pushing westwards in the failing light to the empty tip of Stepper Point, with the lights going out one by one over the Doom Bar. There is no discernible price difference between the two versions.

In 2025, it had 1.75 million paid fans across 236 events, becoming the most attended amphitheater in the country. Already in the 2026 lineup are 150+ shows. Although you may not be a concert person, the geology is enough to make it one of the top things to see in Denver.

This is the best part that most of the guides miss: to get the best out of Red Rocks, the concert tickets are not necessary. During non event days, the park is free between 5am and 11pm. I enjoy the steps in the stadium as early as in the morning when it is very quiet. Tours of visitor centers are approximately 6 dollars a person. Layers: Denver sightseeing is done at an elevation and after sunset the temperatures decrease rapidly. I have been found not dressed up well enough on several occasions.

Meow Wolf Convergence Station

This is the location that fractured my brain in an excellent manner. The Denver branch of Meow Wolf’s Denver location is an immersive art event that covers an area of 90,000 square feet and occupies four levels and 79 distinct installations constructed by more than 300 artists. The way you walk through portals, crawl through tunnels and find hidden rooms which must seem as zero logical sense. It is among the unique things to do in Denver that I have discovered in the whole country.

The price of the tickets is approximately 46 dollars per adult, but Colorado residents will spend approximately 35 to 40 dollars. Perplexiplex venue within is where the concerts, drag shows and comedy nights are held and that is one of the Denver attractions that keeps luring me back as an adult. Allow at least two or three hours, but actually you can spend all day here and not see everything. I have already visited three times and continue to discover new rooms. Wear comfortable shoes since you are going to be climbing, crawling and walking much more than you think.

Casa Bonita

You may have heard of this one and you certainly would have been watching South Park. Casa Bonita is a 52,000-square-foot restaurant with a 30-foot indoor waterfall, real cliff divers, wandering performers, and food that is now legitimately good after South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone spent more than 40 million dollars to undergo renovations. The chef is Dana Rodriguez who is a James Beard nominee and has transformed the menu entirely.

Reservations are no longer conducted in a lottery but they tend to fill quickly hence book early. This is not just dinner. It is a full blown experience. When you are making a list of fun things to do in Denver Colorado, Casa Bonita would be at the top of the list. Casa Bonita Mi Amor is a Paramount+ documentary that documents the whole story of the renovation. I suggest viewing it prior to receiving an invitation since it will make the entire situation more enjoyable.

Denver Art Museum

Denver Art Museum occupies the Hamilton Building, a jaw dropping building that was designed by Daniel Libeskind, and I must say, it has taken me immensely long before I could finally get to visit. The adult price is 19, however, this is one of the tips that save actual money: all people aged 18 and younger are free of charge every day. The museum will be closed on Wednesday, as of June 2025, therefore plan ahead. A number of SCFD sponsored free days are organized on an annual round-the-year basis as well.

Their exhibition includes all the Indigenous art up to modern installations. The show of the first big American Pissarro retrospective in 40 years is the current highlight on which art nerks are flying in specifically to view. The dome is manufactured of actual gold leaf within, and the interior walls are lined with the whole known store of Colorado Rose Onyx, a gorgeous wild flex in a state edifice. The dome observation deck has views of downtown as well as mountains. It is among the most preferred free attractions sites in Denver Colorado and most people pass by it without the slightest idea of what they are missing.

Denver Museum of Nature and Science

This is a free museum located on a hill overlooking skyline and mountain views in its rooftop Anschutz Family Sky Terrace. Inside, adult admission runs $22.95. The museum is usually available all day long and opens at 9am and closes at 5pm except on Fridays when it opens at 9pm and closes at 9pm. The Largest Dinosaurs traveling exhibit is open since March 20 to September 7, 2026, and it is quite spectacular.

Personally, I love it the most since any age group can use it. Children run crazy over the dinosaur exhibits, grown-ups adore the planetarium and all the people are crazy about the gems and minerals hall. Also, it will be closed April 15, 2026 to be significantly remodeled, the Coors Gems and Minerals Hall. This is the answer to the question of what you can do in Denver during a rainy day. The visit itself is justified by the IMAX theater.

Union Station

Union Station is a free area of visit and worth the visit. This is a beautifully renovated train hall of Beaux Arts built in 1914 which is surrounded by restaurants, bars, independent bookstore, and the Crawford Hotel, which is stylish. It also serves as the primary transit center of RTD, linking to Denver international Airport, taking the A Line at approximately 37 minutes at a cost of 10.50 per way.

I prefer to take a coffee in Pigtrain and sit there and people watch in the Great Hall. There are beautiful holiday decorations that are here in winter and the entire building smells glorious during the Christmas market season. Union Station grounds activities in Denver downtown and offers a natural connection to LoDo, the Larimer Square, and 16 th Street pedestrian corridor. It is the ideal beginning of the day sightseeing in the city.

The Big Blue Bear (I See What You Mean)

This 40 foot blue bear statue looks up to the Colorado Convention Center and it is quite good to be honest this is one of the most photographed things to see in Denver. This bear is the unofficial mascot of Denver and was created by an artist by the name Lawrence Argent. It is also free to access and a perfect Instagram photo at any time of the day. Things to Do in Denver Downtown

Much of the action is in downtown. These three are my suggestions to go with the things to do downtown Denver specifically. Walk the Renovated 16th Street

Pedestrian traffic has been restored to 85 percent of the pre pandemic level and the atmosphere has improved significantly compared to the years of construction. I will suggest to begin at the Union Station and walk south. Explore Larimer Square

The block of Denver is the oldest and the most beautiful one, which is called Larimer Square. Denver Performing Arts Complex

DPA boasts of being amongst the largest performing arts complexes in the country comprising 10 performance spaces. Phantom of the Opera, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, and The Lion King will be part of the 2025/26 Broadway season. To enjoy some fun things to do in Denver for young adults on a dating night with young adults, it is difficult to beat attending a show here. The building is located directly in the Arts District, meaning it is within a walk to get dinner or have a drink.

I tend to start at Denver Central Market with my lunch, proceed across the murals and finally find myself in Ratio Beerworks or Cerebral Brewing. This neighborhood has transformed to a great extent over the past few years and continues to improve. Art walks in First Friday art walks in this place are amazing. RiNo is a neighborhood that will never fail you, especially when you are on a hunt of unique things to do in Denver Colorado.

LoDo (Lower Downtown)

The oldest area in the city of Denver is LoDo and the epicenter of nightlife in Denver. It has almost 100 restaurants and bars set in a walkable grid anchored by the Union Station and Coors Field. The game days here are electric, particularly during the times that Rockies are playing. You will be able to add this neighborhood to your whole list of things to do in Denver, particularly when you are fond of craft cocktails and live music.

Capitol Hill

The most eclectic section of Denver is the gay and lesbian community, Capitol Hill, where Colorado has several dive bars and live music joints, Colfax Avenue, and Molly Brown House Museum where the renowned Titanic survivor resided. Highland is located on top of a hill that overlooks the downtown with the best views of the skyline in the city. The restaurants here are usually a step higher and the traffic is also not as heavy as downtown.

The Highland Bridge pedestrian walkway has beautiful sunsets. Cherry Creek

Denver has a trail system (more than 80 miles) comprised of urban paths that have been built and enhanced with paving and the weather is also more favorable than anticipated (300 days of sunshine). These will keep you within the city meeting the need to be active in Denver without necessarily having to drive to the mountains. The city provides all you need be it activities to be done in Colorado Denver in an outdoor setting or even you want to have a morning jog with the mountainous scenery, the city offers it to you. It is in fact the altitude that makes outdoor exercise to be more difficult, so take it easy during the first two days.

Cherry Creek and South Platte River Trails

Cherry Creek Trail is 40 miles and South Platte River Trail is 36 miles long, both of which are tarmac and can be used to run, bike or walk through. They are linked with the High Line Canal Trail which is 71 miles in length and is among the urban trail, which is the longest in America. I run the stretch of South Platte around the Confluence Park several times a week, and it is never tiring. A fine place to start is Confluence Park where the Cherry creek and the south platte intersect.

B cycle bikes are available in rental kiosks within downtown in case you do not have your own equipment. The tracks are in good conditions and marked well. These paths are definitely among the best fun activities to do in Denver. Weekends bring weekend traffic on the paths and therefore mornings are the best.

City Park and Washington Park

City Park has an area of 330 acres and contains Denver zoo and Museum of Nature and Science.
